WHAT’S POSSIBLE WITH MEDITATION? THE BUDDHIST TAKE

Meditation is a huge topic – Buddha taught 84,000 teachings in his lifetime, all related to meditation. In his teachings, Buddha described how we can overcome all of our deluded states – our painful minds, including anxiety. But meditation isn’t just a tool to help us let go of agitated or unhappy states of mind.
The nature of meditation is to help us investigate reality. In particular, it’s a tool that enables us to go in and develop wisdom and insight into our own experience. When we do this, we discover that our mind literally creates our reality, our world.
Yes, meditation is a technique that will teach us how to relax and let go of stress. In fact, meditation will help in every facet of our life, including overcoming anxiety. This, however, wasn’t Buddha’s final intention.
Ultimately meditation is about developing wisdom. Wisdom enables us to understand the deeper underlying causes of our suffering and happiness, and how to let go of the former and cultivate the latter. Through apply this wisdom, we can bring about profound transformation.
Is it possible to completely let go of anxiety? According to Buddha, yes. Through meditation, we can train our mind so that the tendency to develop anxiety will simply disappear and will not be the way we relate to our world or ourselves anymore.

In Buddhism, the term mindfulness is interchangeable with meditation.
Mindfulness is that part of the mind we need to cultivate in order to practice meditation. Mindfulness technically means to remember, to be mindful. We already have mindfulness, the problem is we have mindfulness of the wrong things. For example, if we have a tendency towards anxiety we’ve already mastered mindfulness of remembering all the things that might go wrong.
That’s why we need to train in mindfulness of the right things, to train ourselves to focus on those aspects of our mind that produce what we actually want – peace, happiness and an expansive and open heart.
We can think of meditation as focusing the mind on the internal causes of peace and happiness. The beautiful thing is we carry these internal causes with us everywhere we go. While we all already have them, we need to learn how to recognize them. Once we can recognize our internal causes of peace and happiness. we then train in remaining mindful of them.
This is essentially what the practice of meditation is all about, and how it can be used to completely eradicate all suffering, including the suffering of anxiety.
